The search for New Earth turned into a great trial for entire generations. People were born and died in the Frames seeing nothing but terrible Sponge worlds, haunted by living nightmares - the Scourge. They did not know where they were going, how long the journey would be, and how many more sacrifices would it take.
The faith in the Spirits weakened. One of the Frames - Zodiac - rebelled and overthrew the reign of the Spirits. The Truth Committee - a group of scientists and analysts - took power and declared the Harkback doctrine.
They proclaimed the Spirits liars and enemies of mankind, and Exodus - a suicide mission. Mutineers offered a simple plan - to return through the Chain of Worlds back to the root worlds, where the Exodus started its course. The Old Earth could not have fallen, no matter what lies the Spirits spread.
Technically the mission was possible, as all Corridors were still functional and conquered worlds were less hostile than new ones. So another Frame joined Zodiac, refusing to continue the path of Exodus.
Destruction of the Spirits and their religion had its consequences. The Psychosphere reacted to human thoughts, but now there were no restraining factors to stop or weaken this reaction. The Harkback had to make a difficult decision to survive, and they chose to unite with the Scourge. This lead to unpredictable mutations of people in Harkback Frames, and (according to the Spirits) total loss of their humanity.
People of Harkback, however, felt human and continued on their path to Old Earth. They endured the war against Exodus and the Empire, and restored a portal to Earth on the root worlds. Only one Harkback Frame (Zodiac) completed its journey and entered the portal.
